Irretrievable

Google Photos suggests a set of pictures for 90 degree rotation, mostly food pics with mine and the X’s plates facing each other, that the Google opines would work better in landscape mode. Here is our weekend morning pancakes with all the fillings spread about, the platter we shared at that oasis of a deli we discovered after a day spent moving house, my late night fridge scrambles paired with white wine.

I preview and look at the tableaus originally shot to fit the scroll-pane of a phone screen. Then I spot the little knife of hers I loved to chop with and realize that for a moment, these images have been made new — I have to look at them at a different angle, quite literally. I suddenly recall how the blade eventually came off the handle. (I made no fuss.) A brief second life for these photos: for a moment, their frames rotated, their passing reversed, until I hit ‘Discard’ and begin forget<<ting again.
